“The FDA’s analysis is based on an investigation of the use of Viagra by individuals using FDA-approved prescription drugs,” the agency said in a statement. “This product is not a controlled substance and is not approved by the FDA for sale in the U. S.”
Last year, the FDA began investigating Viagra’s marketing, including its use by some men. The agency said the drug has a reputation for being sold illegally and that it is not approved for sale in the U.
The drugmaker’s marketing of the drug was part of a campaign to convince the FDA to approve its use in the United States.
Last fall, the FDA petitioned Congress to require that drugmakers submit to the Food and Drug Administration approval, but in May, it recommended that the agency consider approving the drug only if it was safe for use and in the best interests of the public.
In the latest push, the FDA said it was reviewing whether the drug’s maker, GlaxoSmithKline, had been found to be tainted, including in the urine of some patients who were taking the drug.
“The FDA is reviewing the information provided by GlaxoSmithKline regarding its use of this drug, and we are working with our partners at FDA to ensure that all information provided by GlaxoSmithKline is accurate and helpful,” FDA’s letter to the agency said. “We will continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of the drug.”
While the FDA is reviewing whether the drugmaker should be allowed to sell the drug in the U. S., it has not yet said whether the company will be required to pay a fine or how much of the drug it sold.
GlaxoSmithKline said it had no comment about the decision. But in a statement, the company said it was aware of the situation and that it had not been involved in the case.
According to the FDA, the drug’s maker has not been contacted, and no other action is expected.
The company did not return calls or text messages seeking comment.
Last month, the FDA said it has received reports that the drugmaker is selling it in a manner that is illegal and misleading, including in the urine of some individuals with erectile dysfunction. In that case, GlaxoSmithKline said, it was the manufacturer of the product, which contains the active ingredient sildenafil, and that the FDA did not determine whether the drug could be used safely and effective for the purpose.
The drugmaker says it will continue to maintain regular contact with the FDA, and that it has not made any changes to the product label or website.
